In Indonesia history, student movement always gives new energy for political and social change. Nobody expected that the development of Kedung Ombo dam turned to be the new start for student movement in 80-90s. 1990s was the most tempted years for student movement in Indonesia. During those years, student movement was not only able to broaden its organizing room, but also stage a consolidation for student organizations at national level. What had made the character of student movement stronger at the time was the effectiveness of strategy development in empowering sectors in people, such as farmers, labors, and other marginalized communities. This cannot separated from politics at the time, as the people was waiting for social change.
This book represents the born of SMID (Students in Solidarity with Democracy in Indonesia), the synergy of student movement and people movement, up to the setting up of People's Democratic Party (PRD). This book does not intend to put a side other organizations, but this book gives pictures, which do not only show historical facts, but also political strategies of student movement to make alliance with the people.Freidrich Ebert Stifftung (FES) hopes that this book will enrich the reference of democracy movement in Indonesia, especially the student movement. And in the end, this book will give contribution to the democracy development in Indonesia, which is one of FES commitments in Indonesia
