The Australian National Atartic Research Expedition's Station at Heard Island was established in December 1947, and after seven years continuous operation it was closed at the end of 1954.

During seven years 92 men lived and worked at Heard Island and the important scientific results which were produced bear testimony to the vigorous efforts of successive parties of adventurous men who battled against great difficulties on the most isolated island in the world.

Ken Dalziel spent 1953 at Heard Island as Radio Supervisor, and during his stay there wrote the chapters of this book as a series of letters to his two young children. Danarto adalah pelukis dan penulis cerpen. Lahir 27 Juni 1940 di Sragen (Jawa Tengah) ia pernah membantu pembuatan film cerita sebagai penata artistik. Pernah pula pameran Kanvas Kosong (1973) dan cerpen-cerpennya memenangkan hadiah (1968 & 1983), dan diterjemahkan ke beberapa bahasa. Juga menyutradarai naskah dramanya (1978).
